Bitter news for Austria’s downhill team: The season is over for Stefan Eichberger. A jump in training was his undoing.
The Austrian ski racer Stefan Eichberger tore a cruciate ligament while training for the World Cup downhill in Val Gardena. The injury means the early end of the season for the 25-year-old. For the Austrian downhill team, Eichberger’s failure a few months before the 2026 Olympics is a bitter setback. The Winter Games take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in February.
The accident happened on Tuesday. After jumping over the camel hump, Eichberger felt pain in his right knee. An initial on-site examination was followed by an MRI in Innsbruck. The serious injury was confirmed.
In addition to the torn cruciate ligament, the speed specialist also suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. Eichberger was taken to Graz. He will have surgery there.
Eichberger has been shaking things up with the world’s best for a year now and has already finished in the top 10 six times in the World Cup. In the current season he showed his good form on the demanding slope in Beaver Creek, where he took seventh and sixth place in the downhill and super-G.
