Alan Soutar won Teemu Harjun on Tuesday in the World Darts tournament 3–2.

The Scot started the match strongly and took the first two sets. After this, however, Soutar missed no less than 15 match points, and Harju leveled the score at 2–2.

Soutar narrowly won the last set 6–5 after the deciding games.

Despite the loss, Harju’s WC debut was a great fight. Vasta was a big early favorite, because Soutar is ranked 54th in the world list. Harju is 163rd.

The probability of the Finnish victory before the match was less than 30 percent based on the bookmakers’ odds.

Although the defeat came right away in the opening round, Harju does not have to leave the legendary Alexandra Palace empty-handed. Even for the loss of the opening round, a nice participation fee of 15,000 pounds, or about 17,100 euros, is paid.

A total of five million pounds in prize money will be distributed in the tournament. The winner will receive exactly one million from the pot. The runner-up will receive 400,000 pounds.
