Tooske Ragas causes surprise among her colleagues when she wonders whether Joran van der Sloot might have repented of his actions after all. “Is it hopelessly naive or just wishful thinking?”
38-year-old murderer Joran der Sloot was found seriously injured by security staff at the infamous Challapalca prison in Peru while distributing breakfast. It is probably an attempted suicide by the Dutchman. Not surprising, because it can freeze at night, there is no heating and no running water.
No pity
Story boss Guido den Aantrekker has no sympathy for Joran. “It sounds a bit harsh, but some people may have thought: I wish that attempt had succeeded, because he is of course really the most hated figure in the Netherlands,” he says at the desk of Show news.
Joran has an 11-year-old daughter. “Dushi, from a woman he once met in prison, and sold things to prisoners there. Everything about that man is actually deeply sad and terrible. I think everyone is relieved that he has to stay there for a very long time, because he has been serving 35 years and that is the maximum sentence you can get.”
Hopelessly naive
Presenter Tooske Ragas then makes a somewhat naive comment. “Could it still be possible – is it hopelessly naive or is it my wishful thinking – that something of a conscience still reveals itself in such a boy? That he thinks: I will put an end to it!”
Telegraaf reporter Jordi Versteegden: “Well… After all these years?”
Celebrity photographer William Rutten: “So far?”
Christmas spirit
Tooske doesn’t know. “That’s my question.”
Jordi: “I understand that you have the question, but I think asking the question is answering it.”
William: “A beautiful Christmas spirit.”
Guido: “That says a lot about you, Toos. It’s nice that you think that, but…”
Jordi: “We were just talking about that daughter. You better have a father like that! Isn’t that really terrible?”
Nobody home
William thinks Tooske is really a bit naive. According to him, we are dealing with a person who does not function properly. “Look into his eyes. Just look at the photo. There’s no one home.”
Guido: “I think the man is really a psychopath.”
Tooske: “I’m afraid of it too, but something somewhere… Well…”
