An attack took place on the popular Australian beach Bondi Beach, near Sydney, on Sunday around 6:30 PM (local time). At least ten people are said to have been killed, including one of the suspected shooters, reports include ABC News based on a statement from the local police. A second suspected perpetrator would be in critical condition to be in.
According to a spokesperson for the New South Wales ambulance service, at least thirteen injured people have been taken to hospital, Reuters news agency reports. Officers were also injured.
Images on social media show at least two gunmen shooting from a bridge towards the beach with large guns. Previously wrote the police of New South Wales on X that suspects have been arrested, but that “the police action is still ongoing.” The police are calling on local residents to stay indoors for the time being.
Jewish celebration
A Jewish Hanukkah celebration is also said to have taken place on the beach, various local media report. Possible motives in relation to the party have not yet been revealed. Israeli President Herzog responded immediately to the news on Sunday. “Our brothers and sisters in Sydney have been attacked by evil terrorists,” he said The Times of Israel.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calls the shooting “shocking and disturbing” and urges local residents to follow police information.
