Three games unbeaten

The 3-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach was the second win in a row for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, which means they continue to climb up the table. Responsible for this is interim coach Daniel Bauer, who demands to stay permanently after another threesome. “We have lit a fire in the club and in the city. We are on the right track and I would like to continue on the path with the boys,” said the 43-year-old.

Bauer took over at VfL Wolfsburg shortly after Paul Simonis was fired, having previously won twelve wins in twelve competitive games with the U19s. A defeat against Bayer Leverkusen (1:3) was followed by a point in Frankfurt (1:1) and victories against Union (3:1) and Gladbach (3:1). Bauer managed to stabilize VfL and bring it back into safe waters.

The new sports director Pirmin Schwegler, who started work on Wednesday, was very satisfied with Bauer, but did not want to make a decision yet. “If we play like that, if we get wins like that, then of course there’s a lot to be said for him,” said the 38-year-old. “It speaks extremely well for the coach how he managed the turnaround. The trend is right, that’s crucial.” Bauer, who is starting the Pro License course in the new year, has apparently secured the favor of the sporting decision-makers.

Bauer also seems to be well received by the players, as double goalscorer Patrick Wimmer explained after the game: “He pushes us throughout the game for 90 minutes, I’m surprised he doesn’t always have a sore throat the next day.” The turbulent calendar year 2025, in which there was a high fluctuation among those responsible for sports with the dismissals of Ralph Hasenhüttl and Simonis as well as sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz, ends next Saturday with a home game against SC Freiburg. Bauer will want to gather further arguments there in order to be promoted from interim coach to head coach.
