According to its climate goals, the Netherlands must halve CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 1990. This requires emission-free zones throughout the country. There will be one like this in Zaandam, the municipality of Zaanstad has determined.
This means that all trucks or commercial vehicles in the shopping area, where the market is located, are no longer allowed to run on diesel or petrol. It should be a stepping stone to a completely emission-free city in 2040.
‘We know them all’
“Has my wife come by yet?” asks the next gentleman. The couple comes almost every week for a bag of Andijker Muizen. “She has the debit card,” he apologizes, but Sophia and Dennis are already placing the usual order. His wife is just arriving, but otherwise he could have taken those pagers with him.
“Isn’t that how it should be?” asks mother Sophia, with an Amsterdam drawl. “We know them all here.”
Sophia doesn’t mind quitting, but he doesn’t know yet what Dennis will do next. “If you have an idea… I can jump in,” he says with a wink. “But first I’m going to process it all in January, just take it easy.”
