Public toilets have been installed in three places: at the Houtbrug at the end of the Grote Houtstraat, on the Nieuwe Groenmarkt and on the Grote Markt. The latter also has a wheelchair toilet.
‘Too massive’
It is extremely busy every year, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors come to Haarlem from far and wide. And many market stalls are also rented by traders from outside the city. This ‘nice hustle and bustle’ is now under fire in local politics. More and more parties think it has become too massive.
The budget rose to 350,000 euros last year. Mayor Wienen wanted to increase that amount for this year, but a majority of the city council sees no point in this. The amount will therefore remain the same as in 2024. Early next year, the city council will consider a number of proposals from the mayor.
Smaller and cheaper
The common thread is that the Haarlem Christmas market should become smaller and cheaper in the future. And that Haarlem entrepreneurs must be central again. How exactly this should take shape will be up to politicians in January.
The Christmas market is open on Friday and Saturday from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM. The market closes at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
