Former world-class player Andrea Petkovic sees a clear development in international women’s tennis.
“What sets the new generation of players apart is really that they are so complete. When I was still playing, there were some of us who were very athletic, others who were very talented. And then there were the strong ones and those who played with more finesse,” said Petkovic on the occasion of the presentation of Mercedes-Benz as the WTA’s new premier partner and automotive partner.
“Today it seems like every single player has all of these qualities,” said the 38-year-old. The new leadership around Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are powerful, have the feel for the ball and the talent.
“And they are incredibly mentally strong,” Petkovic added: “They play for huge sums of money. They provide entertainment. They bring passion to the court and it is truly a joy and honor to follow the development of the WTA and the current generation of players.”
“Whether it’s the prize money, the visibility or the attention that the WTA receives worldwide” – Petkovic feels that the WTA as a whole has developed enormously. The former world number nine ended her career three years ago.
