Mick Schmetgens has already made his first mark among the Werder professionals, and now the 18-year-old central defender can officially call himself a licensed player in Bremen. On Wednesday, the Bundesliga club announced that the Buxtehuder native had signed his first professional contract. As usual, the SVW did not address the term of the working paper. The talent has so far appeared in eleven regional league games in Werder’s second team.
“You can feel that the new experiences are good for him,” said licensing manager Peter Niemeyer about Schmetgen’s first steps in the professional team. Not only was he allowed to take part in training there regularly, but he was also in the Green-Whites’ Bundesliga squad several times in the first quarter of the season and once last season, without being substituted. “We see him as totally focused and inquisitive,” added Niemeyer. “The fact that he is now signing his first professional contract with us is also an expression of this good development and his good performances.”
Coach Horst Steffen praised: “I perceive Mick very positively in training. His performance in the U23 is also at a consistently good level. He brings a lot to the table for a central defender and I trust him to take further important development steps. I am very happy to continue working with him.” Schmetgens himself said: “The first professional contract is certainly something special for every footballer and an important step. But I am also aware that I still have a very long way to go. I come from the region, feel completely at home at Werder and have loved being able to play for this club since the U15. Of course it is a dream to be able to play in the Weserstadion at some point. I will work hard for that every day.”
