The 49-year-old Purmerend has it ending his career confirmed to the NOS, after reporting in the Darts Draait Door.
Van der Voort’s farewell had been in the air for some time. He announced last year that he would temporarily put down his arrows. The veteran only played some demonstration matches this year, where he surprisingly won against world top Luke Humphries last week, NOS writes.
In a darts podcast he said: “Playing darts remains great fun to do and that will never change, only my body doesn’t like it that much anymore. My neck, back and knee… Everything hurts. The whole body says it’s enough.”
Van der Voort, also known in the darts world as ‘The Dutch Destroyer’, had a long career. He played professional tournaments at the BDO darts association from 2001, before switching to the PDC in 2007 together with his best friend Michael van Gerwen.
In addition to his career, Van der Voort has been active as a darts analyst on television for a long time. He also runs his own darts shop.
