The tablecloth between Liverpool FC and Mohamed Salah seems to have finally been cut. In the Champions League, the team’s star is not in the squad.
The fuss surrounding him now has consequences for Mohamed Salah: The 33-year-old is missing from Liverpool FC’s squad for the Champions League game at Inter Milan. On Monday, the club published the squad for the game on Tuesday evening (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) – the star striker is missing.
The Egyptian had taken part in the final training and was one of the players who were instructed by coach Arne Slot. During training, Dominik Szoboszlai, who was recently in the starting line-up instead of Salah, put his arm around his teammate. The two talked and laughed. Salah also joked with Alexander Isak during the warm-up.
The obvious reason for Salah’s exclusion: The striker had clearly criticized the slot after the 3-3 draw at Leeds United on Saturday evening. After the game, Salah described his relationship with the Dutchman as broken. “It feels like the club has thrown me under the bus,” he said – while also indicating that he was thinking about a move. British media wrote of a “civil war.” The background to it all: Salah was not in the starting line-up in the last three league games.
The striker now actually seems to be thinking about saying goodbye. He invited his parents to be at the stadium for the upcoming home game against Brighton – the last game at Anfield before he leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations. “I don’t know if I will play or not, but I want to enjoy it,” said Salah, “because I don’t know what will happen now.” He will be at Anfield to “say goodbye to the fans”.
Salah has been playing for the Reds since 2017. Since moving from AS Roma, he has won the championship twice and the Champions League once with Liverpool. He only signed a new, highly paid two-year contract in April. However, there have been rumors for a long time about a possible move to Saudi Arabia.
