Matthias Sammer has been working for Borussia Dortmund as an external consultant for seven years. He previously celebrated the greatest successes of his football career with BVB, both as a player and as a coach, and therefore has a long and special past with the club. The former BVB championship coach has now revealed which BVB star from his 2002 championship team he would most like to have in the team today.

In the 2001/2002 season, Matthias Sammer wrote Bundesliga history with Borussia Dortmund. At the age of 34, he became the youngest master coach ever in the history of the German upper house of football. A record that still stands today.

The 1996 European champion has now revealed to “Prime Video” who he would like to see from that legendary BVB season still be an active player for the black and yellow team.

“In terms of football, Tomas Rosicky was an absolute feast for the eyes, as he anticipated and with his technique and his movements,” Sammer’s initial choice fell on the midfield genius from the Czech Republic.

Back in his second BVB season, Rosicky was the control center in the creative midfield and fed the star strikers around Jan Koller, Ewerthon and Marcio Amoroso with precise passes.

Stefan Reuter as BVB leader on the pitch

Speaking of Amoroso: The Brazilian, who was top scorer in the championship season with 18 goals in 31 appearances, was sometimes considered a difficult and idiosyncratic character at the time. But Sammer also had only words of praise for him on the “Prime Video” microphone: “I generally enjoyed working with Marcio Amoroso. I just don’t think he enjoyed working with me that much because there was a lot of work behind it,” said Sammer with a laugh on his face.

The title coach also didn’t want to leave another BVB star from the 2001/2002 championship season unmentioned: “We had great players! But what was a bit underestimated back then: Stefan Reuter was a real captain back then. He tried to be an extended arm and influence the team. It was a pleasure to work with these players.”
