The terrible accident took place on the Bezuidenhoutseweg, near an entrance to Huis ten Bosch Palace. It is not yet known why the driver took off.

In a statement from the families of Mara and Doris, issued by the organization On behalf of the Family, they report that the tragedy is ‘indescribable and unfair’. “It is unbelievable that they are suddenly no longer there. We are intensely sad and upset. The ground has been swept away from under our feet and we need time and space to process this tragic loss.”

The young women were out with friends in their hometown in The Hague. The women are died on a day that should have been festive. That is a difficult and unpalatable fact for the surviving relatives, the statement says. The relatives do not provide additional information.

Survivor

One woman survived the crash. She is doing well physically, considering the circumstances. She is back home and continues to recover from the blow. She is also very affected and intensely sad about the loss of her friends.

The residents on Bezuidenhoutseweg also sympathize with the relatives and victims. A few witnessed the crash up close. That had a major impact on local residents.

Some of those who live in the flat opposite the site of the fatal accident say, through On behalf of the Family, that they have placed three candles at the entrance – one for each of the young people who lost their lives. In addition to the two young women, the 24-year-old male driver was also killed.

“It is a small, silent gesture to show that we do not forget them, and that we also carry each other in these difficult days.”

Neighbors flat opposite disaster site

“It is a small, silent gesture to show that we do not forget them, and that we also support each other in these difficult days,” they report in a message in a neighborhood app. “If you feel the need to walk by, stand still or share a moment: you are more than welcome.”

Messages of support and cards

Flowers are still placed at the spot where the car crashed, as well as cards with messages of support and candles. A girl on a gray scooter also lays down a bouquet. She looks upset. “I don’t know them very well, but I wanted to take a moment here,” she says. She soon returns to her scooter to leave.

A man who comes to take a look says he lives nearby. He folds his hands together as he stands at the crash site. “Such young lives,” he reports. “A whole life for them. And now we are here. It’s all very sad.”

‘Please come back. I miss you’

Disbelief and sadness can also be read on other cards at the scene of the disaster. “Dear Mara, we will miss you, rest in peace,” says one of the cards with the flowers. “We love you. Goodbye, dear angel.” Another card says: “Dear Doris, forever and ever in our hearts.”

A friend of Doris is also very affected, it can be read. “Dear Doris, I love you so much. A life without you is unreal. I really want to talk to you and laugh with you. I want you back, please come back. I miss you.” She ends her cry from the heart with: ‘Your partner in crime’.
