Figure skating world champion Ilia Malinin from the USA improves his free skating world record at the Grand Prix final in Japan. It’s not just the score that is historic.
Figure skating superstar Ilia Malinin from the USA shattered his free skate world record with a sensational air show and made history when she won the Grand Prix final in Nagoya, Japan. The 21-year-old received 238.24 points for his performance and improved his own record by 9.27 points.
The world champion performed seven quadruple jumps – including becoming the first figure skater in history to perform the demanding quadruple axel in a competition – and once again lived up to his nickname as the quadruple god.
“This performance was a great honor for me,” said Malinin, who was only in third place after a faulty short program. With the impressive freestyle he ended up with 332.29 points. He missed Olympic champion and compatriot Nathan Chen’s record of 335.30 points from 2019.
The prestigious Grand Prix Series is the highest international event series in figure skating. The highlight of the season is the Olympic Games in February in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Malinin travels to Italy as the absolute favorite.
“I think from now on I’ll try to refine my program and master all these jumps without any problems. There’s a lot more to come after that, there’s already a lot planned for the future – so everyone should stay tuned,” announced the US prodigy.
