While FC Bayern is at the top of the Bundesliga with 34 points from twelve games, Austria’s league leaders Red Bull Salzburg have only collected 26 points in 15 games. That makes an average of 1.73 points. A reading of the Transfermarkt database showed that no leader in the top 20 leagues scored fewer points on average this season.

So far, Salzburg has seven wins, five draws and three defeats. The former series champion has currently been waiting for success for three games. “Salzburg currently doesn’t know why they’re leading the league. The Bulls are showing unbelievably bad performances, among other things, losing a 2-0 lead against Wattens (2:3) when they were outnumbered and disappointing several times against the smallest teams in the league. It’s only thanks to the incompetence of the also struggling competition – LASK at the start of the season, Sturm and Rapid now – that with 19 lost points after 15 games they can even think about a championship title,” says Dorian Schuster, Area Manager in Austria at Transfermarkt. The first pursuers are champions Sturm Graz and LASK with 25 points each.
After the 1-1 draw at SCR Altach, goalkeeper Alexander Schlager recently cited the enormous workload of coach Thomas Letsch’s team as a possible reason for the low yield: “Many of us have never played so many games in six months in our lives. Maybe that is one of the reasons why we can’t concentrate for 90 minutes.” Since the start of the season, the Bulls have played 27 games across all competitions, including Champions League qualification from the end of July. With an average age of 22.8, Salzburg also has the youngest squad in the Bundesliga.
In Europe’s 20 best leagues, only Górnik Zabrze in the Polish Ekstraklasa, alongside Salzburg, has an average score of under 2. The club led by 2014 world champion Lukas Podolski has a value of 1.76 on its balance sheet. FC Bayern, however, ranks at the other end of the statistics. The Munich team collected an average of 2.83 points this season. No other league leader in Europe can beat that, but FC Porto in Portugal’s upper house is on a par.
