The number of people needing help is also increasing year after year. In 2019, this involved almost 16,000 underprivileged people in our province, compared to 22,500 last year.

“We expect another 10 percent extra,” says Haverbeke. “Certain government measures will mean that more people will end up at the OCMW, and ultimately at the food bank.”

This would mean that more than 25,000 West Flemish people will soon be dependent on food aid. Companies that support food banks as part of their sustainability policy are already helping, but it remains uncertain whether that will be enough.

Anyone who wants to support the food banks can contribute to their end-of-year campaign.
