The DFL is returning to an old language rule: Hans-Joachim Watzke now acts as “league president”.

Hans-Joachim Watzke is at the top of the German Football League (DFL) with a new – old – title. Instead of being the “spokesman of the DFL presidium,” the 66-year-old will now go by the previous name “league president.” The bosses of the 36 professional clubs decided this at their meeting on Thursday in Frankfurt/Main.

Hans-Joachim Watzke waves after being elected as the new BVB president.

The last league president to date was Reinhard Rauball until 2019. After the reorganization at the top, ex-managing director Christian Seifert initially took over the office of presidential spokesman, followed by Watzke.

Watzke’s deputies Oliver Leki (SC Freiburg) and Oke Göttlich (FC St. Pauli) will be named vice presidents in the future. The term of office of the heads of the Presidium runs until 2029 as planned; their tasks remain unchanged.
