Union fans whistle at the Bayern star – that’s the reason

From Bayern’s perspective, in the first half of Munich’s game against Berlin, the focus is on the defense chief. The Union supporters have not forgotten one incident.
Heated atmosphere at FC Bayern’s game against Union Berlin in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup: One star of the German record champions in particular was greeted by the “fans” in the Alte Försterei with a loud whistle concert and booed every time they touched the ball, especially in the early stages of the game. It was defense chief Jonathan Tah who received an icy welcome from the spectators in the sold-out stadium.
But why? Tah and Union Berlin – there is a history. The origin of the animosity goes back a long time and dates back to Tah’s time at Bayer Leverkusen.
A look back: January 15, 2021, the “Werkself” will be a guest at Union Berlin. At that time, Tah’s teammate Nadiem Amiri and Union defender Florian Hübner clashed after the latter made a supposedly racist remark. There was a serious suspicion that Hübner had called the Leverkusen player a “shitty Afghan”. Jonathan Tah then expressed sharp criticism of the Berliners in an interview after the game.
The DFB later investigated the case, but ultimately could not find any evidence of a racist statement as Hübner denied having chosen the said formulation. Amiri confirmed that a different choice of words was possible. Hübner was ultimately suspended for two games.
Apparently reason enough for the supporters of the club from Berlin-Köpenick to still whistle at the deserved national player almost five years later. As the game progressed on Wednesday evening, the whistles against Tah died down.
