Bad luck for Wirtz – and good luck for Liverpool

It would have been his first goal for Liverpool. But then the Premier League decided against Florian Wirtz. The goal still counted.
National player Florian Wirtz saved Liverpool FC from the next big setback. With his supposed debut goal, the 22-year-old equalized the deficit against AFC Sunderland and made it 1-1 (0-0). However, the Premier League classified the goal as an own goal by defender Nordi Mukiele, who had deflected the ball. After the recent victory over West Ham United (2-0), Liverpool remains in eighth place, while surprise team Sunderland is now sixth.
Wirtz had already had his first goal in the Premier League on his feet in the first half, but initially missed from a tight angle. Trai Hume (32′) and Alderete (61′) subsequently failed to score for Sunderland, as did Alexis Mac Allister (44′). Then the guests took the lead through Chemsdine Talbi (67th) – with strong help from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman initially played a bad pass and then made an unstoppable deflection.
Then Wirtz turned up the heat. The previously hapless newcomer got the ball in the penalty area and left two opponents standing with quick ball contacts and made it 1-1. Afterwards, the Reds, for whom Mohamed Salah came on as a half-time substitute, pushed for the winning goal, but they could have conceded the late defeat. Substitute Wilson Isidor missed the lucky punch for the guests (90th + 4).
