For Borussia Neunkirchen it’s all about survival. The club is facing financial collapse – for the third time this millennium.

Borussia Neunkirchen is once again struggling with serious financial problems. This now has consequences: As the former Bundesliga club announced at the beginning of the week, the board had submitted an application to open insolvency proceedings at the Sulzbach district court.

“The background to this decision is the events of the last few days and the associated short-term loss of several sponsors,” the club said. As a result, the economic basis for continuing the current season no longer exists.

A few days ago the club’s office was searched. This in turn has to do with investigations against employees of a fiber optic company, as reported by “Kicker”, among others. A former Borussia Neunkirchen coach, who worked as a department head at the accused company, is accused of only awarding contracts to construction companies on the condition that money would flow to the club in return – a form of illegal sponsorship.

The revelation of the allegations now has bitter consequences for the club. This means that several sponsors are lost – and with them essential income. There is talk of a five-figure amount. A sum that the current sixth division club cannot manage. According to reports, maintaining its own stadium also costs Borussia Neunkirchen a lot of money.

After 2003 and 2015, Borussia Neunkirchen, which played in the Bundesliga for three seasons in the 1960s, is now filing for bankruptcy for the third time. But the hope that the end of the club can be averted is still alive. “Our goal is to look for solutions to ensure the continued existence of Borussia together with the insolvency administrator who has yet to be appointed,” the statement said. We will provide “timely and transparent information” about all further activities.
