About sixty-five years ago our history teacher in Sneek told the following anecdote.
The Frisian man of letters and politician Fedde Schurer played Sinterklaas at a school in Bolsward. It was in the fifties.
Little boy: “Sinterklaas doesn’t exist!”
Sinterklaas: “Well, little boy, why don’t you come and see Sinterklaas? Sinterklaas doesn’t exist? Yes, I used to say that too. But look, now it’s me!”
