The capital club plays great against the “Red Devils” and storms into the next round. Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach has to accept a bitter defeat.

Hertha BSC stormed into the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup with a goal spectacle. The Berliners clearly won 6-1 (3-1) against second division rivals 1. FC Kaiserslautern late on Tuesday afternoon and are now in the last eight. Luca Schuler (5th, 60th), Marten Winkler (20th), Kennet Eichhorn (31st), Dawid Kownacki (75th) and Maurice Krattenmacher (80th) scored for the capital club. Marlon Ritter (45th + 2) was only able to shorten the score temporarily.

In the parallel game, Borussia Mönchengladbach experienced a bitter cup exit: The “Foals” lost 1:2 (0:1) at home against Bundesliga rivals FC St. Pauli. Martijn Kaars (43′) and Louis Oppie (83′) shot Hamburg into the next round, but Haris Tabaković’s equalizer (56′) was not enough.

The Berliners extended their winning streak to seven games in a row across all competitions – but conceded a goal for the first time in six games. After Kaiserslautern had the upper hand almost two years ago, the balance of power was clearly different this time.

Even though the guests from the Palatinate had the first dangerous chance, ex-Lauterer Schuler put an early damper on them. A disastrous back pass from Maxwell Gyamfi landed right in his path and gave Berlin the early lead. Winkler followed up after a counterattack.

As a result, the Berliners didn’t let up. Eichhorn, just 16 years old, scored his first professional goal and also became the youngest goalscorer in DFB Cup history. In the first half alone, the Berliners hit the goalpost three times. Kaiserslautern only entered the game shortly before half-time thanks to Ritter’s goal.

In the second half, Schuler completed his brace and once again took advantage of the visitors’ loss of the ball to score. Joker Kownacki scored straight away – and Krattenmacher, who was also a substitute, got the well-deserved final score. The Hertha fans chanted maliciously: “One more goes, one more goes in.”

At the beginning of November, Borussia won 4-0 at Millerntor. At the quick reunion, Gladbach initially continued their performance seamlessly, had more of the game, but didn’t do enough with possession. On his 30th birthday, Nikola Vasilj in the Hamburg goal only had to parry a long-range shot from Kevin Stöger (12th). The goalkeeper was then able to watch as some of the balls flew far past his goal. Top scorer Tabaković, who scored twice in the 4-0 win, was also mostly absent.
