For the fifth time, the organizers of the AI Week – the University of Lübeck, the Technical University of Lübeck, Fraunhofer IMTE and DFKI from the Hanse Innovation Campus Lübeck, the IHK Lübeck and the state of Schleswig-Holstein – are inviting the public, schools and specialists to the week, as part of which the exhibition also takes place.

For the first time, we are specifically targeting the regional economy with a pre-openingsays Prof. Dr. Marcin Grzegorzek, director at DFKI Laboratory Lübeck. The aim of the day is to identify interfaces between research and practice and to open up new perspectives for the application of AI in business during the exhibition, said Grzegorzek. With AI Week and formats such as the Lübeck AI Experience Day, we show that Schleswig-Holstein is not only keeping up, but is a pioneer in application-oriented AI researchsays Digitization Minister Dirk Schrödter. The constantly growing AI ecosystem from science, business, administration and society comes together here to learn and benefit from each other. Artificial intelligence becomes tangible for everyone who is interested – in workshops and lectures, on experience days, on campus and directly in Lübeck’s old town.

Companies face challenges when using AI

The use of artificial intelligence offers small and medium-sized companies in particular numerous opportunities to further improve their competitivenesssays Dr. Dirk Hermsmeyer, speaker in the innovation department IHK in Lübeck. We know from conversations, inquiries and surveys that many small and medium-sized companies in our region are addressing this issue and are examining the potential for AI applications in their operations. This applies to both use in products and processes. However, a lack of resources in smaller companies could hinder the speed of introduction of AI projects, says Hermsmeyer. The AI Experience Days are therefore a valuable platform for meeting development partners from science and exploring further possible applications for the use of AI.

Artificial intelligence has long been part of our scientific, social and economic developmentadds Prof. Dr. Helge Braun, President of the University of Lübeck. He emphasizes: The AI Week shows how we in Lübeck research, test and think ahead with artificial intelligence in its many facets – and thus provide new impetus for a responsible future design that strengthens the innovative strength of our region and has an impact beyond it. At the same time, it is symbolic of what is particularly important to us at the University of Lübeck: the close connection between research, business, education and urban society.

Research results and projects show how AI can be used in business and society

The University of Lübeck, Lübeck University of Technology, Fraunhofer IMTE, Fraunhofer MEVIS, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and other exhibitors show in the transition house how AI can be applied and improved in medicine, business, technology, administration, cities and many other areas. Universities and research institutions are in direct dialogue with society and business and use their expertise to offer concrete support and impulses for companiessaid Dr. Muriel Helbig, President of the Lübeck University of Technology.

During the pre-opening, company representatives talked to scientists about specific business questions and ideas and discovered project results that affect, for example, company processes, production, corporate communication, storage, logistics, agriculture or energy-related areas. Medical applications also play a major role and are in demand: At the DFKI Laboratory Lübeck, we see our mission not only in the research and development of artificial intelligence processes – but also in putting them into practice, especially in the medical field. They should directly benefit patientssays Grzegorzek from the DFKI Laboratory Lübeck.

Outlook for AI week

Every year, the AI Week impressively shows what a strong AI Med ecosystem has developed in Lübecksays Dr. Jan Graßhoff, Head of the Competence Center Software, Data and AI at Fraunhofer IMTE. The transfer from research to practice is demanding in medical technology, and safety and transparency have top priority, says Graßhoff. In our joint projects with industry, we at Fraunhofer IMTE develop explainable AI systems whose decisions are understandable. This strengthens trust in AI and can accelerate the approval of products based on it – so innovations come to market more quickly. One example is AI assistants that help older patients return to movement and activity after injuries.

Anyone who would like to experience even more projects, current research or workshops on the topic of artificial intelligence has the chance to attend events during AI Week until November 15th.
