Surinamese descendants of enslaved people and indigenous communities accept King Willem-Alexander’s apology for the Dutch slavery past. They said this in conversation with the king on Monday on the first day of the royal couple’s state visit to Suriname. The king asked for forgiveness in 2023 for the inaction of his own ancestors during the decades of slavery in the Dutch colonial areas. He also apologized on behalf of the government during the commemoration of the history of slavery in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam. Reporter Royal House Wouter de Winther was at the conversation and explains exactly what was said.
