In the meantime, residents of Kortrijk who do not yet have a container can continue to use residual waste bags. The city will be the only one in the IMOG region to continue to offer smaller residual waste bags in 2026. Garbage bags from 2025 remain valid provided they have an 80 cent sticker.

“IMOG was somewhat surprised by the enthusiasm,” says Allijns. “But they guarantee that everyone will receive a container from the first week of the new year. Thanks to the city’s intervention, the application will also remain free for two years. After that it will become chargeable, so we continue to encourage residents to make the switch.”

With the new approach, Kortrijk wants to contribute to the Flemish objective of producing 30 kilos less residual waste per inhabitant by 2030. The city council sees the fact that half of the residents are already participating as a strong signal towards that ambition.
