Kings of Leon play “Joe’s Head” live again after 16 years (video)
On Tuesday (September 3, 2024), Kings of Leon played their song “Joe’s Head” live for the first time in 16 years. The Nashville band surprised fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome Arena in Calgary, Alberta, when they performed the track from their debut album Youth & Young Manhood (2003).
“Joe’s Head” live for the first time since 2008
The performance at the Scotiabank Saddledome Arena was part of their current “Can We Please Have Fun” North American tour and was met with great excitement from those in attendance. Before the first chords of “Joe’s Head” were played live, frontman Caleb Followill explained about the track from their debut album: “I think it’s safe to say that no one has heard this song in 15 years,” which already caused cheers in the crowd.
The decision to include the song, which was last performed on stage in 2008, in the setlist was part of the tour’s special “Song For The City” segment, where Kings of Leon select a special track for each city. Taylor Swift does something similar. She plays a mix of four songs at every gig on The Eras tour, each time a surprise and making the setlist unique.

With old hits on a new tour
“Joe’s Head” was written by Caleb and Nathan Followill together with Angelo Petraglia and produced by British producer Ethan Johns. The return of this rarely played piece was a highlight of the concert evening for many in the audience and once again illustrated the band’s connection to their early works. The decision to bring this track back to the stage after such a long time fits in with a number of other nostalgic throwbacks from the band. They recently played “Talihina Sky” again for the first time since 2017 and brought “Birthday” back to the setlist after a ten-year break.
