According to a survey by the trade association, many retailers are dissatisfied with the Christmas presents they have received so far. For the last week of November, 60 percent of the 300 companies surveyed reported weak business, as the German Trade Association (HDE) announced. Around 25 percent were satisfied.
“Saturday was a ray of hope in many places with slightly better sales and gives a little hope for noticeable sales impulses on the Advent weekends,” said HDE Managing Director Stefan Genth. The survey took place between November 28th and 30th.
Toys, jewelry and consumer electronics are doing well
When retailers look at the overall performance of the Christmas business so far, only 14 percent are satisfied. These primarily include the areas of toys, watches, jewelry and consumer electronics.
70 percent of all respondents reported fewer visitors than in the previous year. According to the information, one in five companies surveyed expects more business in the coming weeks. “For many retailers, the final Christmas spurt determines the success of the entire financial year,” said Genth.
126.2 billion euros in sales
According to the HDE, retailers expect total sales of 126.2 billion euros for this year’s Christmas business in November and December. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 1.5 percent.
