It initially looked like a weak day for the German men’s biathlon relay in Östersund. Then came the comeback.
The German men’s relay team started the Olympic winter with a fourth place at the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund. Justus Strelow, Danilo Riethmüller, Philipp Nawrath and Philipp Horn used a total of nine spares and were 55.7 seconds behind the victorious world champion Norway at the finish. France took second place ahead of hosts Sweden. After 4 x 7.5 kilometers, the quartet from the German Ski Association were 31.0 seconds short of their first podium finish of the season.
The sometimes strong wind caused some problems at the shooting range. Strelow needed almost two minutes for his standing shooting because he wanted to do it very precisely. Although the Saxon avoided a penalty lap, he quickly fell far behind and only handed over to Riethmüller in 15th place. The Harzer brought his team up to eighth place after just one spare. Nawrath was then even stronger without the extra cartridge – and even stormed into third place before the last change. But the Thuringian Horn could not hold this.
The German women around overall World Cup winner Franziska Preuß had previously only finished eleventh in France’s victory and incurred three penalties.
