The man who was shot at in Meppel this evening has died. It concerns a 26-year-old man from Raalte, the police said.

The shooting took place on the Van Ewijcksingel in Meppel. A large part of the street was cordoned off with tape and white screens were placed around the victim.

Several local residents thought it was fireworks: “I heard five or six bangs, but didn’t think much of it at first,” says one of them. “When the ambulance passed by I thought: there is more going on here.”

Soon there was a lot of screaming and people called the emergency services, says a man who was picking up his wife from work at the time of the shooting. “I saw the victim lying on the ground. When I returned a little later with my wife, half the street was cordoned off. They spent a long time resuscitating.”

Several local residents have images of the shooting, which show the victim lying motionless on the ground with blood near his eye and a pool of blood next to his head. According to them, the images are circulating online in WhatsApp groups and on TikTok.

In addition, footage from a security camera from an adjacent apartment shows that there were five or six shots. It can be seen that two cars drive away at high speed in opposite directions after firing the shots.
