The Netherlands is making an additional €10 million available for emergency aid to Sudan. This was announced by State Secretary De Vries for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. The money is intended for acute aid to the Sudanese population and goes to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund of the United Nations.

State Secretary de Vries: “Sudan is currently the largest humanitarian crisis, more than 21 million people are facing acute food insecurity and famine has been identified in parts of the country. The recent violence in the city of El Fasher and the wider Darfur region has only increased the needs. It is very important that we as the Netherlands provide additional aid, and that we continue to increase international pressure for a ceasefire and compliance with humanitarian law of war, including improved access to humanitarian aid and protection of aid workers.”

Rising violence in Darfur

The siege and capture of the city of El Fasher has led to atrocities among the civilian population and new flows of refugees. In Tawila, also in Darfur, more than 650,000 refugees arrived in a short time, causing a shortage of almost everything. There is a shortage of food, water and medicine in Sudan. In addition, it remains difficult to reach Sudanese who desperately need help, due to insecurity and logistical problems, but also due to administrative obstacles. In areas that are very difficult to reach, local residents play an important role in providing assistance. Women and young people often take up the challenge on a voluntary basis and provide food, protection and medical assistance. It is possible with the Dutch contribution Sudan Humanitarian Fund continue to support these local initiatives.

Aid to Sudan

The additional contribution brings Dutch support for emergency aid to Sudan to a total of more than €33 million in 2025 (including through Dutch contributions to the Dutch Relief Alliance and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement). The Netherlands has previously made a contribution of €16 million to it Sudan Humanitarian Fund done and also helps the Sudanese through other channels. For example, the UN Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will release 47 million US dollars in 2025 for aid to the country. The Netherlands contributes €55 million to this fund every year. The Netherlands also contributes to the reception of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries. More than 9 million people have been internally displaced, and 4 million Sudanese have fled to surrounding countries.
