So no orange buildings in Zoetermeer, but there is a compelling photo exhibition in the town hall.
Free exhibition
The exhibition is in the City Hall Forum until Monday, December 1 silent scream to see. Here, photographer Henriëtte van Gasteren shows compelling photos of victims and perpetrators of sexual violence. The images are confrontational and make discussion about inappropriate behavior open to discussion. “I want to discuss sexual misconduct. It is up to the audience not to judge,” says the artist, who has known the subject intimately since her daughter was a victim as a student.
The exhibition can be seen for free on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Orange the World
Orange the World of the United Nations runs from Tuesday, November 25 to Wednesday, December 10. The start date of November 25 is the International Day against Violence against Women. That date was not chosen randomly: on that day in 1960, the three Mirabal sisters were murdered on the orders of the regime of the then dictator of the Dominican Republic. The sisters fought for women’s rights in their country.
More than a hundred countries now participate in Orange the World and highlighting objects in orange has been a permanent feature since 2014. In 2015, a Dutch building turned orange for the first time: the Peace Palace in The Hague.
Orange
As a Dutch person, when you think of the color orange, you probably think of the orange fever during a World Cup, or of the Royal Family. The United Nations chose orange for Orange the World because it is the color of the sunrise. It is the symbol of the dawn in a world without violence against women.
