It is not yet known why Lefevere was in the hospital. At the beginning of this year, he was admitted to hospital in Ghent after becoming unwell at a restaurant. Perhaps he was then the victim of a blood pressure drop.
Seventy-year-old Lefevere resigned as CEO of Soudal Quick-Step at the end of last year. He has been the inspiration and driving force behind the team since 2003. Under his leadership, the team achieved almost a thousand victories, including 22 so-called ‘monuments’, a Grand Tour and 124 stage victories in a Grand Tour.
