Ilse Warringa reacts very pissed off in the Shownieuws studio when her TV classic De Luizen Moeder is compared to Today Inside. “That’s not art, that’s not culture,” she shouts.

The cutbacks at the NPO are causing actress Ilse Warringa a lot of concern. It also really affects the creative sector, she explains Show news. She emphasizes that something like De Luizen Moeder would never have existed if there were no public broadcaster. “If it had been made by the commercial companies, it would never have been such a great success.”

‘This is going too far’

Why does Ilse think that? “Because then you have to meet different standards. There must always be a celebrity in it, it must not be too niche, it must be accessible. Jokes are then deleted in advance. Exactly what De Luizen Moeder was so famous for, that it grated…”

She continues: “That would never have been possible with the commercial companies, because they had already said: ‘This is going too far’, or: ‘You are losing a large audience.’ Of course the word niche was also mentioned when I wrote it, like: ‘Isn’t it for too small a target group?’ I then said: ‘That’s fine, but I think it’s funny.’”

Ronald critical

Ronald Molendijk adds a critical comment. “You just said that things are possible at the public broadcasters that are not possible at the commercial ones, but here at SBS we have a program in the early evening, VI Inside, or what is the name of the program? Voetbal Inside or? No, where Johan Derksen and so on are. VI, yes. I mean: everything can be said and done there, right?”

Ilse: “Yes, but ‘having everything said’ is not art, that is not culture. That is just a talk show (makes a throwaway gesture, ed.). That is not culture, right? That is just a talk show. That has nothing to do with making something, does it?”

Art form

Ronald stands his ground. “Yes, but for the people who watch it. Your mood was a bit that it is not possible, because it is censored.”

Ilse: “No, not censored, but an art form, namely making something that is ironic and written and where people who play it have toiled for years in small rooms to be able to do that, that is something completely different from just ventilating your opinion unfiltered (makes a dismissive gesture again, ed.). That is not art, is it?”

Totally different

It is incomprehensible what comparison Ronald is making here, says Ilse. She finds it scandalous that a series like De Luizen Moeder is compared to a populist talk show. “That has nothing to do with culture or depth, does it?”

She points out that The Luizenmother is an art form. “That’s completely different from just sitting at the table and having a chat!”
