PSV has made mincemeat of Liverpool in the Champions League. Peter Bosz’s team took an early lead in the match at Anfield on Wednesday evening. For a moment, things seemed to be going in the wrong direction for the 3,000 supporters in the away section. But in the second half it was Guus Til and Couhaib Driouch who gave PSV the three points, by scoring 1-4 as the final score.
It was already going around in advance: this could be a fun match. PSV is in excellent form and Liverpool is searching. The reigning English champion is currently twelfth in the Premier League and PSV could really use a victory in the Champions League, with a view to the next round.
Virgil van Dijk made the mistake
PSV started the match strongly and that quickly resulted in a corner. That corner was knocked out of the goalmouth by the captain of Liverpool and Brabander, Virgil van Dijk. And so the ball hit the spot early on. Ivan Perisic sent the Liverpool goalkeeper into the wrong corner and quickly put the Eindhoven team at 0-1. The 3000 fans in the away section were only too happy with this. In any case, they performed well throughout the entire match.
PSV could not enjoy the lead for long, as Cody Gakpo got into scoring position in minute 12. However, the shot from the child of the PSV club was saved by Matej Kovar. Unfortunately for the traveling fans, the rebound fell at the feet of Dominik Szoboslai, who easily scored the 1-1.
Liverpool pressed more and more and PSV could do nothing but stop. After half an hour, Virgil van Dijk, born in Breda, almost seemed to make up for his mistake at 0-1, but his header hit the crossbar. Before halftime, Kovar showed once again why he is PSV’s first goalkeeper by saving Hugo Ekitike’s shot from the corner. Fortunately for PSV, Alejandro Hernández Hernández then whistled for half time.
PSV starts
PSV came out of the dressing room fresh for the second act. Liverpool’s storm seemed to have subsided. That turned out to be exactly the case when Mauro Júnior sent Guus Til away in minute 56. The striker, as we may call him nowadays, did not miss this excellent opportunity and shot the 1-2 against the ropes.
And no, PSV was not finished yet. Fifteen minutes before the end, substitute Ricardo Pepi hit the post, after which the other substitute, Couhaib Driouech, was quick to tap in the 1-3. To make it even crazier, the Moroccan winger also made it 1-4.
A major performance from PSV. The Eindhoven fans will not go to sleep for a while. Thanks to this victory, wintering in the Champions League suddenly becomes quite a reality for Peter Bosz’s team. In the remaining matches against Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and Newcastle United, two points should be enough to reach the next round of the ‘Billion Ball’.
