Several trucks ended up in a slide on a highway in the American state of Minnesota on Tuesday. The incident was caused by a powerful snowstorm that is ravaging much of the Upper Midwest. Strong wind gusts of up to almost 80 km/h, slippery conditions and periods of so-called whiteouts, where visibility is severely limited by snowfall, leading to life-threatening driving conditions. In some regions, such as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the snow can reach a total height of several tens of centimeters. Traveling on Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day is not recommended. Areas around the Great Lakes are also expected to experience heavy lake effect snow, a phenomenon in which cold air flows over relatively warm lake waters, leading to heavy, localized snowfall.
