Assan Ouédraogo is one of the high-flyers of the season. But the midfielder will have to watch in the near future.
Setback for national player Assan Ouédraogo: The 19-year-old from RB Leipzig suffered a tendon injury in the back of his left knee in the game against Bremen. The club announced this on Tuesday.
Sports director Marcel Schäfer was affected: “It’s an incredible shame that Assan is out now of all times. He was on a very good path, has made big steps in the last few weeks and has become a German national player.”
Ouédraogo made his debut in the last international match against Slovakia and scored directly. “This injury is all the more bitter for him and also for us as a team. We keep our fingers crossed for Assan for a quick and complete recovery,” explained Schäfer.
The midfielder is one of the biggest whiz kids of the current Bundesliga season. In eleven games he scored three goals and prepared three more. He also scored a goal in the DFB Cup.
Coach Ole Werner spoke of an “extraordinary story” at Ouédraogo before the last matchday. He continued: “It’s a great path he’s taking – in which he has invested a lot and also had to cope with setbacks. It’s just great that he can reward himself in this way.”
By the setbacks mentioned, Werner was referring to the serious injuries that the 19-year-old has already had. For example, in November 2023 he suffered a torn syndesmotic ligament and was out for several months. An ankle injury followed in the summer of 2024, followed by a knee injury. Both took him several weeks. The next piece of bad news came at the end of November when he injured his thigh and wasn’t fit again until spring. Ouédraogo missed almost the entire last season, which is why the coaching team was even more pleased with his current high form. It is still unclear how long the new national player will be out for.
