In 2014, Philipp Lahm holds the World Cup trophy in Rio de Janeiro. Hardly any German is convinced that the DFB team will climb to the World Cup throne next year.

An overwhelming majority of Germans do not believe that German footballers will win the World Cup next year. Only eight percent expect national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s national team to win its fifth title after 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014 at the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico. This emerges from a representative Forsa survey commissioned by “Stern”.

61 percent believe the DFB team will at least reach the quarter-finals. Only 18 percent of those surveyed see Kimmich and Co. in the semifinals, and eight percent expect them to reach the final. Five percent expect an exit in the preliminary round, like at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and 2018 in Russia.

The East Germans are particularly pessimistic: only one percent of them expect Germany to become world champions. Those who describe themselves as interested in football are somewhat more optimistic: 13 percent of them believe they will win the title.

The market and opinion research institute Forsa interviewed 1,007 people aged 18 and over for the survey on November 20th and 21st.
