The 100 Greatest Musicians of All Time: Guns N’ Roses – Essay by Joe Perry

There’s no question about it: they breathed new life into rock’n’roll as we love it. I remember someone handed me “Appetite For Destruction” and said, “You need to hear this.” Back then, bands like Bon Jovi and Whitesnake were popular, but Guns N’ Roses were made of different stuff: They dug a little deeper to get to the roots of rock ‘n’ roll. I listened to a lot of Aerosmith with them – which meant I also heard a lot of the bands that influenced us. And I also remember being a little jealous.

They were our opening act in 1988, and what impressed me most at the time was their charisma – on and off stage. Axl knew how to captivate an audience. Before a show, everything he could come into contact with was covered with foam rubber – from a teleprompter to a mic stand. They wanted to make sure he didn’t hurt himself – or break it into pieces. People really felt like he was just being let loose from a cage into the world. And part of the thrill, of course, was not knowing what he was going to do next.

Guns N’ Roses were called metal back then, but they weren’t

Guns N’ Roses were called metal back then, but they weren’t: rock is sexy, metal isn’t. Songs like “Paradise City” and “Welcome To The Jungle” had all the necessary ingredients: the choruses came in the right place, Slash always played in a way that served the song and never allowed himself to be complacent about showing off his technique. None of them needed to distract from their music with over-the-top gymnastics. Duff McKagan reminded me of that AC/DCBassist: His parts were comparatively simple, but they were the reliable driving force of the band; Izzy Stradlin also played an important role.

For me they are a perfect example of how a band can push rock music forward. Sometimes you ask yourself, “How can anyone top what the Yardbirds, Zeppelin, or the Stones did?” But then you hear Guns N’ Roses – and you regain your faith.
