Immediately before the duel with Villarreal, Borussia Dortmund has to cope with a personnel setback. A national striker is unavailable for the important game.

Borussia Dortmund will not be able to rely on Maximilian Beier in the Champions League game against FC Villarreal. The 23-year-old attacker had to stop the final training session on Monday due to muscular problems. As coach Niko Kovač explained, it is a case of hardening that rules out playing on Tuesday evening.

“Maxi had muscular problems, a hardening. It currently looks like he won’t be available tomorrow,” said Kovač on the eve of the game, which kicks off at 9 p.m. Beier had been part of the starting line-up several times in recent weeks, so his absence represents a sensitive gap in Dortmund’s offensive.

The exact severity of the injury was not initially communicated. Kovač also left it open whether Beier would be available again for the next Bundesliga game.
