Jimmy Cliff is dead. The singer and actor was 81 years old. His wife Latifa Chambers announced via Instagram: “It is with deep sadness that I announce that my husband Jimmy Cliff has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia.”

She continued: “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and collaborators who have walked his journey with him. To all his fans around the world: Please know that your support has been his strength throughout his career…Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.”

Jimmy Cliff’s career path

Born James Chambers on July 30, 1944, the Jamaican made a name for himself worldwide with hits like “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People.” In addition, countless artists covered his songs. Among other things, Bruce Springsteen tried his own version of “Trapped” live several times.

In addition to his musical successes, he also had acting successes – he starred on the big screen in “The Harder They Come” in 1972.

In Jamaica he was awarded the Order of Merit in 2003 – an honor previously received by Bob Marley, among others.
