Christian Heidel had to leave the general meeting of FSV Mainz 05 in the meantime. According to the club, the reason is a family emergency.

Sports director Christian Heidel left the general meeting of Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 early. The reason for this was a family emergency, as a club spokeswoman confirmed. The “Allgemeine Zeitung” had previously reported on it.

As the “Bild” newspaper reports, Heidel is said to have returned after being absent for a good hour and said to the meeting: “My father isn’t feeling well, but it’s not that dramatic yet. That’s why I’m back.” In a halting voice he explained that he had to give a speech that left him unsettled. A spokeswoman for the club confirmed to the German Press Agency that Heidel actually began his speech in tears and explained that his father was not feeling well.

According to the “Bild” report, Heidel’s parents are around 90 years old and have often had health problems. Heidel had already canceled the trip to the Conference League game against Nicosia at the beginning of October due to his father’s health problems. Recently, Heidel-Senior recovered from it.

Heidel has worked for Mainz for 33 years, with one interruption. Between 1992 and 2016 he held the position of sports director for 24 years. After almost three years as sports director at FC Schalke 04 and a break, he returned to Mainz in December 2020.
