Third division soccer team VfL Osnabrück celebrated a late win against FC Ingolstadt in front of their home crowd on Saturday. The purple-whites won against Bayern 1-0 (0-0).

Lower Saxony’s winning goal came shortly before the final whistle. The hosts had been fighting against the compact Ingolstadt team for a long time before Ismail Badjie shook the Bremen bridge with the winning goal in the 89th minute.

Weak first half

In the first half, the food offered on the pitch was still quite limited. Although Osnabrück acted superiorly and had more possession and shares of the game, VfL rarely came into their own in the final third. Robin Meißner had the best chance to make it 1-0 for the purple-whites in the eleventh minute, but his low shot was saved by FCI keeper Kai Eisele. The Lower Saxony team did not pose more of a goal threat in the first half.

Ingolstadt is causing problems for VfL

The guests remembered their defensive tasks at the Bremer Bridge and rarely appeared in front of the opponent’s goal. Shortly before halftime, the Ingolstadt team had their best opportunity of the first half: Max Besuschkow’s shot was deflected and flew just past the Osnabrück goal to the right (45th + 1).

After the break, the guests took advantage of the opportunity and created the next dangerous goal opportunity. Ingolstadt’s Yannik Deichmann broke through on the right side and then shot the ball past the VfL goal from almost 16 meters (53′).

Badjie becomes the match winner

Afterwards the game played along for a long time. The hosts couldn’t think of anything against Bayern’s well-organized defense for a long time, and VfL hardly had any chances to score in the second half. Only with a final offensive did the Lower Saxony team manage to build pressure on the guests. This was rewarded in the 89th minute when Badije scored with a curling shot to make it 1-0 and win.

Thanks to their happy success, the purple-whites are still fully involved in the promotion race. With 29 points after 15 match days, VfL caught up with league leaders MSV Duisburg, who lost 4-1 to TSG Hoffenheim II on Friday.
