The chances of winning the first title in the team competition in 32 years were good. But against Spain you can only rely on Alexander Zverev – even though Germany’s top player was injured.

The German tennis players around the ill Alexander Zverev missed the Davis Cup final. The selection of the German Tennis Association (DTB) lost 1:2 against Spain in the semi-finals of the final round in Bologna. This means that the German team has to give up hope of its first triumph in the prestigious team competition since the last final appearance 32 years ago.

The defeat was certain after the final doubles, which Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz lost against Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez 2:6, 6:3, 3:6. Previously, world number three Zverev had equalized 1-1 with a 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (7:5) against Jaume Munar – even though he was physically injured.

“I’m sick,” said the man from Hamburg after his last match in a season that he had described as “incredibly unsatisfactory” a week ago at the ATP Finals due to sporting and physical setbacks.

At the start of the semi-finals, Jan-Lennard Struff lost 4:6, 6:7 (6:8) against Pablo Carreno Busta. In the quarterfinals against Argentina, Germany was able to turn a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 win. Unlike the Germans, the Spaniards did not compete with their best players. World number one Carlos Alcaraz had to withdraw shortly before the start of the tournament due to thigh problems.

In the final on Sunday (3 p.m.) Spain will face Italy. The hosts and defending champions beat Belgium 2-0 in their semi-final, even without top star Jannik Sinner, who was missing for stress reasons.
