Costello Hautamäki has composed Popeda’s greatest hits. MIKA HEIKLIÄ
Tampere Työväen Theater director Riku Suokas and conductor Pekka Sistonen are completely surprised at the premiere of the musical Reunion in -85.
According to Suokka and Sistonen, Costello Hautamäki of the band Popeda has forbidden the performance of his biggest hits in the Reunion version in September. The duo says that permission to perform has not been obtained for the songs Skis, Hot summer mixed Gas, Inspector Peppone.
In the original In -85 musical, Kuuma kesa was the opening number of the play, but now the plans have changed.
– Yes, this was a surprise, they were still shown last summer. Is there a dispute in the background? We don’t have any definite information, says director Suokas to Iltalehte.
Pate Mustajärvi’s lyrics are used in hits and Ikurin Turbiini Oy, which owns the rights to the lyrics, would have allowed re-performances, according to Suokka and Sistonen.
– The publishing rights of the compositions through Element Music Oy belong to the composer Hautamäki and he has the rights to ban performances, there is no ambiguity about that. Yes, this seems like some kind of disagreement between the current Popeda and Pate Mustajärvi. This announcement of the ban was a complete surprise to the working group. Yes, there is a contradiction, conductor Sistonen reflects.
In 1985, the 14 performances of the Reunion performance at Tampere’s Työväen Theater were sold out in five hours. Banned hits are filled with other compositions.
– I’m sure many people will be disappointed or at least surprised when the show doesn’t start with the familiar Kuuma kesä hit, Sistonen thinks.
Iltalehti could not reach Popeda’s guitarist Costello Hautamäki or Popeda’s ex-singer Pate Mustajärvi to comment on the matter.
In -85, the premiere of the musical Reunion is on December 5.
