The price that farmers in Europe receive for their milk has been declining for a while, after a strong first half of the year. This is also noticeable in Belgium: dairy cooperative Milcobel dropped its standard milk price to 37 euros per 100 liters in November, the lowest level since 2023, specialized media previously wrote.
Preventing price collapse
According to EMB, farms are experiencing problems due to the low price. The federation asks to activate the European mechanism for voluntary production limitation. This is a crisis mechanism in which prices would have to rise again due to a limitation of supply. Farmers who use it receive financial compensation. “It is now that the European Union must respond to prevent a price collapse,” EMB said.
