Ex-Bundesliga star takes over fourth division team

A well-known name takes on his first head coaching position: Christian Fuchs joins a struggling fourth division club – and is welcomed with warm words.
New phase in Christian Fuchs’ career: The former Bundesliga and Premier League professional is now head coach at English fourth division club Newport County. As the club announced, the 39-year-old signed a “long-term contract”.
Newport County are currently bottom of the table in League Two. After only three wins from 16 games, coach David Hughes had to leave. Club chairman Huw Jenkins said of Fuchs’ signing: “Christian is ambitious and wants to become a coach in the Premier League one day. We believe he shares our strong belief in what is possible at Newport County.”
He makes his debut on Saturday (4 p.m.) away from the 15th place in the table. Oldham Athletic. Newport is Fuchs’ first stop as head coach. The long-time defensive player surprisingly won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016 and most recently worked as an assistant coach at MLS club Charlotte FC. There he worked under head coach Dean Smith, who, among other things, managed Aston Villa in the Premier League. In the first play-off round around two weeks ago, Charlotte narrowly failed against New York City FC (0:1/7:6 i. E./1:3).
At the beginning of 2023, Fuchs ended his active career in Charlotte. In Germany he previously played for VfL Bochum, Mainz 05 and FC Schalke 04 – in total he made 183 appearances in the Bundesliga and scored ten goals. Fuchs played 78 international matches for the Austrian national team and was also captain.
