Haiti is characterized by many crises. But the national soccer team gives the country hope and goes to the World Cup. There will probably be a goalkeeper from the fifth German league.
Next year the World Cup will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico with 48 teams. Also included: Haiti. Coach Sébastien Mignést’s team recently celebrated a 2-0 win against Nicaragua and is now qualified. The Caribbean state was able to enjoy the ticket for the first time since 1974. The team includes a goalkeeper who plays in the German top league.
Josué Duverger was born in Montreal, Canada and has Haitian citizenship. The 25-year-old made his debut for Haiti in 2018 and has made six appearances so far. He last played 90 minutes on the pitch in the 3-3 draw against Costa Rica in September in the World Cup qualifiers.
Duverger gained his playing experience at FC Cosmos Koblenz in the fifth division. The World Cup driver’s team is currently in eighth place in the Rhineland-Palatinate/Saar Oberliga. The keeper has already made 13 appearances this season.
Haiti is a country characterized by mismanagement, poverty and gang violence. According to the Foreign Office, it is also the poorest country in America, as around sixty percent of the approximately 12 million inhabitants live below the poverty line.
In July 2021, President Jovenel Moïse, elected five years earlier, was assassinated. The country is currently governed by a presidential transition council with a rotating chairmanship; elections are scheduled to take place in 2026. In addition, a severe earthquake struck the country in January 2010, killing 300,000 people.
There has also been violence at the Sylvio Cator Stadium in Haiti: in March 2024, according to the association, it was “attacked and occupied” by gangs and employees were kidnapped. Since then, the Haiti national team has no longer played its home games there, but most recently completed the World Cup qualification in Curaçao, which also qualified for the major event.
Haiti is also affected by the “Travel Ban”, an entry ban imposed by US President Donald Trump into the United States of America. So people from Haiti are not allowed to enter the USA. Players, coaches and supervisors are excluded.
