The German Football Association (DFB) is hoping to be awarded the contract to host the European Women’s Football Championship in 2029. After Italy, another rival has now given up early.

The DFB now has one less competitor in the race to host the 2029 Women’s European Championship. Portugal withdrew its application for the tournament in four years, as the Portuguese Football Association (FPF) announced. At the end of August, Italy’s association had already pulled out.

The Portuguese association justifies the move by saying that they want to concentrate fully on hosting the 2030 Men’s World Cup. Portugal is organizing this together with Spain, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The decision will be made on December 3rd

In addition to the DFB, Poland’s association and the joint duo Denmark/Sweden are also in the running for the 2029 European Championship. The UEFA Executive Committee will decide where the tournament will take place on December 3rd. If the DFB wins the contract, the planned host cities are Wolfsburg, Hanover, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne, Leipzig and Munich.
