The world’s best cheeses were chosen last week in Bern, Switzerland. Finnish cheese dairies also won gold, silver and bronze there.
Herkkujuustola won gold, Perho Liiketalousopisto silver, Juustoportti three bronze medals and Jukola cheese bronze.
World Cheese Awards competition is the world’s largest cheese competition. More than 5,000 cheeses from more than 40 countries were evaluated there.
Juustoporti’s cheese master Ville Kuivinen states in the announcement that in Switzerland they competed alongside the traditional cheese countries in a very tough series.
Juustoportti has learned its lessons from Keksi Europe in the 1990s. At that time, the market for cellared special cheeses was small, as Finland was not used to strong tasting cheeses.
– The cheese culture was different then, reminds the CEO of Juustoporti Timo Keski-Kasari in the bulletin.
Blue cheese made by Perhon Juustola, Perhon Rehtori, won silver.
– It is a pleasure to notice how the appreciation of Finnish cheeses is growing both at home and internationally, the cheese maker Olli Takanen Perhon Juustolasta says.
The World Cheese Awards competition was organized for the 37th time. It is organized annually in a different country in cooperation with the Guild of Fine Food. Every year, hundreds of cheese professionals from different parts of the world serve on the competition’s international jury.
