Netflix Last Chance U – the Yankee soccer coach known from the documentary series John Beam66, was shot and killed last Friday in Oakland, on the campus of Laney College.
ESPN’s including 27 years old Cedric Irving Jr. has now been charged with Beam’s murder. If convicted, Irving could face up to 50 years in prison or even life in prison.
According to the prosecutor, Irving had no previous criminal record. The man is suspected of having mental health problems. Police say Irving knew Beam.
Irving was arrested at the train station. He had the gun with him that Beam was shot with. Irving admitted to the shooting. Oakland Deputy Police Chief James Beeren according to which the suspect entered the campus “for a specific purpose”, and it was a “well-targeted act”.
Irving’s brother told the San Francisco Chronicle that Irving had recently lost his job as a security guard following a fight and was facing eviction from his home.
It was already the second shooting incident in the same week in Oakland, a city of about 400,000. Last Wednesday, a student was shot at Oakland’s Skyline High School. The student is in stable condition, and two minors are in custody.
The district attorney by Ursula Jones Dickson think there is a need to talk about the gun problem in Oakland. According to him, weapons are too easily accessible.
– I cannot accept that there are children in our community for whom this is now normal. For two days in a row, they have had to be locked on campus due to gun violence. I don’t accept it, Jones Dickson thundered.
